Mission Statement

The Island Party of Prince Edward Island is committed to an accountable and transparent government whose aim is to put Islanders first.  This commitment will be reflected in an agenda that emphasizes democracy, strong economic growth, fiscal responsibility, affordable health care, retirement security and stewardship of our Island resources.  We will work to give the Island back to Islanders by decentralizing the power and influence of government by encouraging citizen education and participatory government throughout the Island community.  The Island Party recognizes that we can only achieve these objectives by creating a sustainable economy to ensure a positive social and economic future for all Islanders.

Interim Position on Issues

Implement an Island Constitution to protect Islanders’ rights.  This constitution will require a referendum by the citizens to implement or make any changes and includes the following:

  • Restore democracy to all Islanders.

  • Full citizen participation in governance through the engagement of Islanders.

  • Institute Islanders’ right to vote on key issues (binding referendum).

  • Make MLAs accountable to their constituents by bringing in RECALL legislation.

  • Implement citizen initiative – a process for citizens to propose legislation or change/revise existing legislation.

  • Ensure reasonable response times to respond to and resolve citizen issues.

  • Reduce MLAs’ salaries and perks.

  • Reduce the number of MLAs from 27 to 19 and Cabinet from 10 to 5.

  • Full disclosure and free access to the public for all taxes and where they are spent.

  • Ensure property stewardship while respecting individual property rights.

  • Make bureaucrats accountable for their decisions and actions.

  • True whistle-blower protection.

Support for Islanders

  • Reduce the provincial gas tax and fight the Federal Carbon Tax

  • Reinstate Town Hall meetings at least every three months

  • Provide the best medical service possible with available resources by working with subject matter experts (doctors, nurses, LNAs, technicians, and all others in the health care field) as they understand the issues.

  • Deliver quality education to achieve appropriate standards and teach children essential skills along with traditional education. This will be done in tandem with students, parents, teachers and others in education.

  • Make sure all Islanders have access to local foods/supplies and develop projects to make Islanders more self-sufficient.

  • Support entrepreneurs by establishing start-up programs and low-interest loan assistance for small businesses.  This will make them self-sufficient and create jobs.

  • Promote and support private enterprise and competition in all government contracts using a fair and transparent process, to avoid monopolies.

Legislative Changes

  • Allow time between 3 readings of any Act or Legislation.

  • Never pass any Act that contravenes the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

  • Rescind the Municipal Government Act (MGA).  The new act must allow all Islanders to have a voice and vote on all issues affecting them including annexation, restructuring, budgets, etc.

  • Allow PEI to follow the National Building Code rather than adding restrictions through the PEI Building Code.

  • Restore elected Island boards run by residents, not government.

  • Plug all loopholes in the Lands Protection Act, ensuring all corporations operating in the province comply with provincial lands legislation, with those over the 3,000-acre limit being compelled to divest of holdings such as farmland and properties, as specified within the LPA.

Protecting the Most Vulnerable

  • Commitment to a true poverty reduction strategy.

  • Ensure low-income seniors are protected so that they are not forced to choose between basic staples such as food, medication, heat and shelter.

  • Improvements to services for disabled Islanders, including elimination of red tape in favour of expediency.

  • Proper supports must be put in place to ensure adequate housing is available prior to immigrants arriving on PEI.

Management of Provincial Resources

  • Reduce taxes and ensure responsible management of public tax dollars.

  • Make agencies, boards and commissions accountable.

  • Protect vital resources – water, land, forestry, fishing and the environment.
